Smart Evaporator vol.12

Testimonials

Suitable instrument for analytical method development of forensic medicines.

Today we had an interview with Mr. Hasegawa, who works on analytical method development of forensic medicines in medical fields. We asked him about what made him purchase the Smart Evaporator C1 and impressions after his demonstration.
(Interviewed with: Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Department of Legal Medicine, Assistant Prof. Kotaro Hasegawa)

Tokunaga
We appreciate for this opportunity today.
Dr.Hasegawa
It’s my pleasure too.
Tokunaga
So would you explain us more about your research field?
Dr.Hasegawa
I’m working on the method development of quantitative and qualitative analysis of tiny medicinal toxicants found in biological samples and also the method development of natural toxins analysis.
Tokunaga
So your main research field is toxic materials. Would you explain more about that?
Dr.Hasegawa
The quantitative and qualitative analysis of tiny medicinal toxicants in biological samples” is related to the law-evading drug research that you’ve may often heard in recent news, and I research on extracting component from herb and also its analysis.”natural toxins analysis” is mainly related to mushrooms, and I do research on the measurement of natural toxins and poisonings.
Tokunaga
So you are using the Smart Evaporator C1 for the analytical method development of those toxic materials.
So can you explain your experimental method?
Dr.Hasegawa
About the law-evading drugs, we receive the herb sample from the police agency, and used the analytical method development of forensic medicines. Then we dissolve that with organic solvents like ethanol or methanol. With liquid-liquid extraction or solid phase extraction, we isolate and extract the mixed substances then analyze with LC. You can see the further details in this essay.

Tokunaga
Thank you very much. What exactly is the solid phase extraction method like?
Dr.Hasegawa
This sort of cartridge has a filter, and the subjected substances are adsorbed and extracted with this filter. This cartridge is for positive ion, and this for negative ion. I use properly according to the subject.

Tokunaga
So you are using filters.
Dr.Hasegawa
I use 9ml test tubes or lightproof 4ml vials. I basically use the glass containers for their thermal conductivity.
Tokunaga
So in the past which evaporator did you use with those containers?
Dr.Hasegawa
I used to use this one.
evapo02 Figure 2: gas blowing concentrator
Tokunaga
It’s a gas blowing concentrator. Did you have any problems with this?
Dr.Hasegawa
Well, I didn’t like the blowing unit and the main body were separated. I thank to the flexibility, but the fine adjustment of heat blocks and containers were necessary all the time, which was not easy. I was looking for built-in concentrators, and was introduced the Smart Evaporator C1.
Tokunaga
What impressions do you have so far?
Dr.Hasegawa
The function part like heater is built-in, and I found it much easier to use. The evaporation speed is faster than that of blowing concentrator. Many types of containers are compatible, and I also like its small footprint. This instrument is very useful for method development.
Tokunaga
What is the reason you’ve purchased two units at a time?
Dr.Hasegawa
There’s another researcher in this lab, and I thought each should have one for each.

Tokunaga
So that was for exclusive use. Is there any reason you’ve selected Sun and Sky for each?
Dr.Hasegawa
The lab tends not to be colorful, so I intended to delight this place.
Tokunaga
I see. Your feedback is appreciated since that is also our intention to delight the lab. Thank you for arranging your time today, and hope you’d like to use our device.

Interviewer Comment

I’ve been honored to know that C1 is partly related to the analytical method of forensic medicines
